My Yogic BackgroundGretchen Karros
I started doing Yoga over 25 years ago (from a book!) but didn't take any classes until 1969 when I went to Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California to study with a Yogi named Joel Kramer. After several years of raising my children and not studying with anyone, but still practicing, I went to India in 1977 and 1979 and stayed at an Ashram (a spiritual community) where I took classes in Yoga and Meditation and Postural Integration (deep tissue therapy). Then, in 1985 I started teaching Yoga at Forest Park Community College. About three years ago, I began teaching at Webster University, and I also teach credit courses at Meramec Community College.

The Yoga I teach is the classical style, also called Raja Yoga, using the principles of Patanjali, a Yoga master from 2,000 years ago. It includes Asanas, (the poses or postures), warm ups specifically designed for certain muscles, breathing techniques (Pranayama) and Meditation techniques. I also bring to the class information about health & wellness, since I had training in various forms of bodywork and other healing modalities.

I recently took a five-week teacher training class in Chicago with Rod Streiker, a Master Yogi in the Kundalini tradition. In addition, I have studied with Rodney Yee, Eric Schiffman, Angela Farmer, Shiva Ray, and others. Please call 314.772.8848 for more information.

This is a chance for you to learn Yoga in the privacy of your home, at your own time, for as long or as short a time you wish to continue. It takes a commitment, that is if you want to reap maximum benefits, but after a few sessions you will begin to feel more relaxed and definitely more limber. Here are just a few more of the benefits of Yoga practice
You Will

  • Develop strength, increased flexibility and a filler range of motion
  • Become more focused, able to concentrate and learn more easily

  • Learn to bring all aspects of yourself into balance

  • Less chance of sports injury through the limberness and agility

  • Increased vitality, less fatigue, better breathing and breath control

  • Overall better health, and a trimmer, more erect body

  • Learn meditation and breathing practices to reach that place of inner peace and tranquility

  • Through the increased awareness and introspection, a calmer and more relaxed body/mind with less anxiety and tension

    Yoga and Bodywork/Structural Release

To compliment your Yoga practice and experience new found flexibility, you may want to consider "Deep Connective Tissue" bodywork.

This is a series of ten sessions, each one concentrating on different areas of your body where there may be lack of flexibility, contraction, misalignment, or even chronic pain.

You will experience the muscles that just won't stretch become freer more efficient and relaxed. The body becomes more balanced and ready for deeper and more powerful Asanas.

Please call 314-772-8848 for more information. (A recent issue of "Yoga Journal" featured "Rolfing" as an adjunct to Yoga. My training is the same, but without the pain which is usually associated with "Rolfing".)
